"I love jazz." Three very simple words, that said in any context will cover anyone who says them with sophistication and good taste. And the thing is, when you like jazz, saying it can be  a fantastic flirting technique (we admit we’ve used it).

However, this has not always been the case. Jazz was born during the second half of the 19th century in the USA, by the hand of African-American communities, victims of slavery.

The first reaction of the West to these rhythms was fright. Accustomed to much more calculated and traditional music, it took a while until it finally came to be appreciated and popularized, deeply affecting the music of the moment and everything else that was to come.

And after this information, which you may or may have not already known, you might be interested or curious to hear a little bit of jazz. And in Bastardo we want to make your wishes come true, that’s why we bring you something with clear influences of this genre and those that derive from it.

Donald Funk

Donald Funk appears in the Madrid scene at the beginning of 2017 as an out of control force. The premise of the band is very clear: music without concessions and a lot of live energy. Classics of the genre, versions of famous songs of pop or rock and the occasional eccentricity, make this trio a real show on stage. Moments of surprising arrangements combined with sections of improvisational trance and a lot of good vibes and freshness are the icing on the cake of this formation.

In their repertoire we can find versions with their personal touch, some hardly identifiable, being that the game that entertains the band. Names like Michael Jackson, Bill Withers, Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Eric Clapton, or even more modern bands like White Stripes, see their most iconic themes get a little twist and get adapted to a raw and powerful funk.

Although Donald Funk is a vocal formation, the themes have a marked instrumental character, given the influences of each of the musicians.

Who forms Donald Funk?

Jaby Sánchez (Javier Sánchez Grande): guitarist, singer and composer from Madrid, combines his personal project with multiple formations of different styles, with which he has toured all the great halls of the capital. In 2015 he recorded his first solo album, "Inner Blossom", and is currently about to publish the second, which will be called "Acuarela de paso". In his role as an artist he flirts with contemporary jazz, improvisation and composition in real time, influences that clearly stand out in Donald Funk.

Roberto Natal Sánchez: one of the most active drummers of the Madrid scene, very lavished in the blues circuit of the capital. His contribution is what is expected from an instrumentalist of his level; an extraordinary solidity and a clean and precise execution.

Benito Díaz (Ben Albert): even though this multi-instrumentalist from Veracruz can be seen more often playing the drums in blues and rock projects, in this case the electric bass is hung to add strength to the group, besides singing some another subject.

However, he also has a marked frontman side, a fact that can be confirmed by seeing him in the band "Quartet Tarantino", a project that leads the guitar and voice and that has already delighted the Bastard on occasion.

But let’s get to the point, June 29 is a must in Bastardo for those who enjoy good music and freshness on stage! You might be lucky and meet someone as interested as you in jazz…
