At #BastardoMadrid you already know that we don´t like conventionalism and established standards, so when a brand like BIIS contacts us to collaborate with us we get very excited. There is nothing we like more than such bastard brands trust our space to present their awesome projects.
This unconventional jewellery brand was created by Rubén Gómez as the designer and Sara Lasry as the jewellery specialist. After the boom they have had with their previous collections, they come to our most bastard hostel to present their latest collection in collaboration with the artist Irene Gaumé.
This Friday 23rd, you can´t miss the party for the presentation of this new collection inspired by summer souvenirs, which will be set with a DJ and audiovisual projections in the famous hall of our hostel in Malasaña. An if you like the brand`s cool pieces you can buy them with a 70% discount at the same event so you can wear them in the best scenario.
Come and relive the summer in November in the most bastard hostel!
But, what is BIIS?
Well, it's not just any jewellery brand. Ruben Gómez and Sara Lasry decided to found this reverse jewellery creation. While most jewellery brands are born to satisfy a female audience, BIIS breaks with the established and is born as a brand of male pieces to lead to the creation and design of unisex pieces. They claim that are clothes like boyfriend jeans or wide shirts that suit both girls and boys, so why should it be different in the accessories? All unisex aesthetics have become more and more prominent in recent years, but no brands have dare to take it to the world of jewellery.
Their provocative and risky identity can be clearly seen in the products they offer. BIIS wants to offer beautiful and versatile objects based on honesty rather than trends or marketing. Its previous collections reflect this desire to go beyond the conventional, with jewels that evoke office material, such as slaves, washers, safety pins, plates, staples... all converted to silver and pink gold jewellery. All this casual and even punk aesthetic contrasts with the elegance of the brand, which is present all over the world both in physical stores and through its website. Its image is represented by teeneagers who evoke all the aesthetics of the 90`s that is so trendy lately.
"BIIS isn`t fashion, it`s not chic, it`s not glamour, it`s not luxury"
Colaboration with Irene Gaumé
Irene Gaumé (1984) is a multidisciplinary artist, specialized in digital sculpture. She studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amberes. After her studies in traditional sculpture she incorporates new technologies into her practice.
In this collaboration with the BIIS team, they give the artist the opportunity to ask questions about our relationship with mass-produced objects to recall the experience of the journey through a collections of jewellery inspired by the Souvenirs.
There is no tradition without modernity, no craftsmanship whitout tourism, no jewellery design without 3D modelling. The visual work entirely created in 3D language merges with the jewellery pieces to give us an interpretation of hypermodernity. The scanned models orbit tourist spaces and anonymity, built memories and personal stories along with cultural appropriation.
Beachy jewellery
The main idea of this collection is to recreate all those sensations produced by being on a trip or a vacation, going along a promenade...Probably the first jewels that each of us bought in our lives were is a coastal market, hippy shops, souvenirs...
They have brought that spirit into the contemporary world and made and effort to find elements common to all nationalities that will make us understand what it is to travel and buy souvenirs in 2018. That`s why in the collection they present pieces with that irony that they have already worked on in past collections, pieces that seem to have been taken from Ibiza`s hippies and turned into jewels, but linked to icons of the digital era such as the Street View doll or Google`s geolocator.
Pieces made with techniques typical of souvenirs taken to the world of jewellery recovering techniques like Kisch by introducing photos printed inside the pieces, as with his Fuji pin, or large-format earrings as if they were refrigerator magnets, Ganesh or the flag of the Bahamas.
Of course, jewellery realted to money, money is important for enjoyment, but it also generates memories. The coins collected are now pending, just like the Amex card or the 1 dollar bill. For the first time they have worked luxury costume jewellery with pieces that elevate tribal hippy post earrings to a higher category by imitating turtle shell or simulating frozen ice.
What better excuse to visit our coolest hostel in Madrid? Whether you are passionate about jewellery or not, this Friday you have a date in our hall, where we will have a DJ to liven up the party. In addition, if we finish late, you know that our rooms are always available for you to sleep like a real bastard.
At Bastardo we always try to offer you different activities and plans in our hostel, because we believe you deserve the best and we want your experience to be as perfect as it could be. Every week we change and update our schedule with different activities of all kinds, so you will probably find something of your interest.
